French Blue is a warm blue or dark blue, not the silver doctor blue or kingfisher blue as we know it. On these streamers the wing hackles are of the same length, when the two color hackle is called for the rear hackle should be twice as heavy as the forward hackle. Two or three turns of tinsel should be taken around the bend of the hook prior to when the wood duck is tied in. (The author of this Layout for the Web--Bryant Freeman) ties the silver tinsel in at the head of the fly and goes back to the bend of the hook and on the forward wraps ties in the wood duck with the tinsel, which makes a nice smooth body). Heads are varnished Black. The originator of many of these patterns used a Number two Sproat hook although they may be dressed on hooks 2X or 3X long. CAINS RIVER TYPE SALMON STREAMER FLIES George Leonard Herter So-called Cains River Streamers were named after the Cains River in New Brunswick. Mr. Fred N Peet, from Chicago, used this type of streamer successfully in that area in 1924. This type of streamer, however, had been in use many years before this in the central, eastern and western parts of the United States. This type of streamer was popularized by the Weber Life-Like Fly Co., of Wisconsin. These streamers, although at first tied on regular length hooks, are now tied mostly on 3x and 4x long shank hooks which are more effective, but the hackle tangles in the bend of the hook. The wings are of a long streamer type made of four neck hackles or saddle hackles. They are tied on edge, as practically all hackle streamer wings are tied. The two inner hackles are usually of a different color than the two outer hackles. The bodies are usually made of tinsel which is wound over the hook shank two or three times to form a thin body of solid tinsel. Give the tinsel body a good coat of clear celluloid enamel after it is finished. The hackles are put on at the head of the fly over the butts of the wings and jungle cock shoulders. The hackles are often of two different colors. First, one color is wound on and tied off; then the other is wound on ahead of it. This does not mix the colors but keeps them in separate color bands. There are actually hundreds of variations of these salmon streamers which have long been in use for fishing for trout, bass and pike as well as salmon. William Mills and Sons Catalog #136 March 1936 Cains river Streamer Flies These flies are successful for early fishing for salmon and have been used very successfully by many prominent anglers. They are beautifully tied and have jungle cock feathers on the streamers. It is noted on all patterns there is no mention of harlequin or wood duck tails. Several patterns show up here which are not in the Bates collection.
